Senior Home-Care Agency
Start a home-care agency as the baby boomers turn 80: more families need help at home every year than the existing agencies can staff. The hard part isn't finding clients — it's hiring and keeping caregivers.
In a metro area of 1.2 million, the number of people over 80 grows every year and most of them want to stay at home. Families need help with bathing, meals and medication; hospitals need someone to take patients home after discharge; the state pays for care through its waiver programme. Existing agencies turn clients away because they cannot find staff. The decisions are an operator's: how many caregivers to hire and what to pay them, which clients to take — private-pay families, long-term-care insurance, Medicaid waiver or short post-hospital stays — how much to spend on training and supervision, and how fast to open in a new county. It teaches the open-market lesson from the supply side. Demand is not the constraint; staff are. The agency that hires well, keeps its people and grows its capacity with the market wins clients no rival had room for.
