Main Street Florist
Run the florist on Main Street in a town of 14,000: weddings booked a year out, sympathy arrangements by noon tomorrow, Valentine's Day and the walk-ins, against the supermarket flower counter and online order sites.
You have a cooler, a design bench, a delivery van and a shop window on Main Street. Fourteen thousand people live in town and thirty-five thousand in the county; three funeral homes, a dozen churches and one wedding barn bring steady work, and every holiday brings a rush. The decisions are a florist's: what to quote for a wedding when the bride has seen the supermarket's prices, how much to buy from the wholesaler when flowers die in a week, how many designers to hire for a Mother's Day that does a month's work in four days, and whether to fight the online order sites or take their thin-margin orders. It teaches a perishable-stock business driven by occasions: forecasting, waste, peak staffing, and the relationships with funeral directors and planners that bring the big orders.
