Fitness Club Chain
Run 12 mid-priced gyms squeezed between $10 budget clubs and $200 boutique studios. Set membership prices, staff the floor and the classes, and decide whether to fight for volume or move up-market.
Your chain has 12 clubs across a metro of two million people, each with a weights floor, a pool in half of them and a class timetable. You charge around $60 a month; the budget chain down the road charges $10 and the cycling studio upstairs charges $35 a class. The team decides membership prices, how many trainers and front-desk staff each club needs, whether to put money into equipment and classes or into a price war, and which neighbourhoods are worth a 13th club. It teaches the stuck-in-the-middle problem in real numbers: churn, the value of a member who stays three years, and why mid-market businesses need a clear reason to exist.
