Hair Salon & Barbershop
Open a salon with a barber's chair in a town of 20,000: colour clients, Saturday cuts, kids before school starts and the occasional wedding party, against a discount haircut chain and the old barber who knows everyone.
You have a lease on a storefront two doors from the bank, four chairs and a shampoo sink. Twenty thousand people live in town and another twenty-five thousand in the county; everyone needs a haircut, and most of them already have someone they trust with it. The decisions are the salon's: what to charge for a cut and a colour when the chain by the supermarket does a walk-in for $18, how many stylists to bring on and how to keep them from leaving with their book, whether to add a barber's chair for the men the old shop is losing, and how hard to go after wedding parties. It teaches a service business where the product is a person: capacity is hours in the chair, loyalty follows the stylist, and price is a statement about quality.
