Farm Shop & Market Garden
Grow and sell on five acres outside a town of 8,000: a weekly veg box, a farm shop, the Saturday market and the chef at the inn, against the supermarket's produce aisle and the orchard stand down the road.
You have five acres of market garden, two high tunnels, a barn you have turned into a shop and a sign on the county road. Eight thousand people live in town, twenty-two thousand in the county, and in summer the lake brings visitors who want something local. The decisions are a grower-retailer's: what to charge for a veg box when the supermarket sells lettuce for a dollar, how many hands to hire for a season that peaks in August, whether to stand at the Saturday market or keep people coming to the farm, and how much to sell to restaurants at wholesale. It teaches a business with a short season and a long winter: subscriptions that smooth cash flow, the margin difference between wholesale and retail, and selling a story as much as a tomato.
