Turnaround: The Regional Grocer
Lead a 40-store regional grocery chain on a 2% margin as a hard discounter opens its first stores in your towns. Decide where to cut price, which stores to keep, and how to hold the weekly family shop.
Your chain has 40 supermarkets across three counties, a loyal older customer base and a margin you could lose in a bad quarter. The national supercenter has the edge of town, and now a no-frills discounter is opening small stores with 1,500 lines at prices you cannot match across the board. The team has to decide where to fight on price and where not to, how many staff each store really needs on the floor, whether to put money into fresh and service or into the shelf price, and which neighbourhoods are worth defending at all. It teaches managers how a business with a 26% gross margin lives or dies on labour productivity and basket share, and why matching a discounter everywhere is usually the fastest way to go out of business.
